Sacred Stepping Stones, composer by Lisa Young.
Recorded at Fenway Center Dec. 2021
Sacred Stepping Stones:
The piece speaks about the way the land shapes us, and how the planet is sacred and precious to us all. It was the commissioned work for massed choir for the Festival of Summer Voices, Gondwana National Choral School 2020.
Lisa Young from Melbourne, is known to choral, jazz and world music listeners as a creative vocal stylist, composer and improviser, incorporating Indian and African elements in her work. Renowned as a passionate and engaging workshop leader, choirs throughout the world perform Young’s works.
Aside from the English text, the song incorporates Young's vocal sound-bank which draws on konnakkol language (Sth Indian vocal percussion) and a variety of scat syllables.

This land it shapes me as I listen in and breathe
And the light enchants me as I catch it on the breeze
And we awaken to stand for the call
That our planet is sacred and is precious to us all
What is the colour of the road that finds you?
Does the bend in the river shape you?
We’re alive and breathing still believing painting dreaming …
Cold rocks and stepping-stones
Cool shaded olive groves
Hiking the Buffalo mountain
Ochres of desert clay
Acacias blue and grey
Under a rainbow sky
And we’ll fly.
