Technically, both methods of brewing require a filter to place the coffee grounds in.
The difference is, the espresso machine (a true espresso machine at that) forces hot water under high pressure through the filter and in a few seconds, you have a heady espresso shot in your cup.
On the other hand, the traditional filter coffee or drip coffee method, the hot water percolates slowly through the perforations in the filter, letting gravity do its job and the brew collects several minutes later in the cup/jar below.
In this video, we do a comparison of both methods and check the final result in taste.
To do full justice to the experiment, we use filter coffee powder which is used for brewing filter coffee in the traditional two-chamber vessels and make a milk-based caffe latte in our espresso machine.
We also use the same powder and make a decoction in the traditional filter coffee vessel and add milk just like you would make filter coffee at home.
