Cole County employees push for adoption of state executive order on paid family leave

Описание: Employees in Cole County from the health department and prosecuting office presented a community order to the commissioners to adopt state executive order 17-09, which gives all state employees six weeks of paid leave for primary caregivers and three weeks for secondary caregivers.

"It's very important for everybody, while I understand none of you are mothers. All of you are sons, and I think your mothers would agree that the first few weeks after a child is born are excruciatingly important for both the mother and the child, so much so we can consider it a human right," said Anjali Gandhi, Assistant Prosecutor Attorney.

Currently, Cole County employees receive 12 weeks of unpaid paternity leave through the Family and Medical Leave Act but must be employed for a year.

Other counties like Jackson and St. Louis have adopted the state executive order and reported reduced turnover, greater employee retention, and reduced absenteeism.
