Hanle is one of the remotest villages in Ladakh. Located 260 km from Leh in Changthang plateau, Hanle is a popular destination for stargazing and astronomical research. The village has three telescopes set up in collaboration by various institutes to observe supernovae, comets, gamma ray bursts and other extra-terrestrial events.
The main telescope is called the Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT). It is an optical-infrared telescope named after Indian physicist and Nobel laureate Subramanian Chandrasekhar. This telescope's primary mirror has a diameter of 2 metre. It can be controlled to face any spot in the sky remotely via a satellite link by astronomers at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bengaluru.
The second telescope, known as the GROWTH-India telescope, has a 70-cm mirror and was set up by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and IIT Mumbai. It is used to track cosmic events that occur over a period of time, such as afterglows of a gamma ray burst or tracking the path of asteroids.
The third telescope is called the MACE and its run by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. The MACE telescope is used by researchers to study high energy gamma radiation in the Universe in order to determine their source.
