A brief history of Yoweri Museveni’s leadership from 1986 to his latest 2026 election victory, and what it teaches African leaders about power and democracy.
When Yoweri Kaguta Museveni took power in 1986, he promised Ugandans a new era—an end to dictatorship, corruption, and political chaos. He famously said Africa’s problem was leaders who overstayed in power and pledged to serve only one term. At the time, he was hailed as a liberator.
Nearly four decades later, Museveni has become Africa’s longest-serving leader. Through constitutional changes that removed term and age limits, he has won election after election, culminating in another victory in 2026. His rule has brought relative stability, economic reforms, and regional influence. Uganda moved away from years of violent coups and economic collapse.
Yet, his prolonged stay has also come with growing controversy. Opposition parties face restrictions, elections are frequently disputed, and civil liberties have narrowed. Younger Ugandans, who form the majority of the population, increasingly demand political change. The rise of opposition figures such as Bobi Wine reflects a generational struggle between continuity and renewal.
Museveni’s story is therefore complex: part liberator, part strongman. It is a reminder that leadership must evolve with the people it serves.
Advice to African Leaders
Honor constitutional limits and democratic institutions.
Prepare for peaceful succession.
Protect free speech and political competition.
Create space for youth leadership.
True legacy is not measured by how long one rules, but by how well a nation thrives after a leader steps aside.
