After analysing the DNA of more nearly half a people with and without major depression, the study found that while a large amount of the variants associated with depression were shared between men and women, there was a “higher burden of genetic risk in females which could be due to female-specific variants.”

Dr Brittany Mitchell, one of the study’s researchers, told The Guardian, “We already know that females are twice as likely to suffer from depression in their lifetime than males.”

“[But] until now, there hasn’t been much consistent research to explain why depression affects females and males differently.”

The study’s lead researcher DrJodi Thomas clarified that the findings should not discount the impact of external influences on the development of depression.

Instead, she is hopeful that the study can pave the way for more gender-conscious personalised treatment plans, explainingg that “Traditionally, a lot of research, particularly on health conditions, has really focused on males.”

“This [has left] a really big gap in our understanding of female health.”
