Описание: Located along the south coast of the Isle of Wight, which is separated from the south coast of mainland England by the Solent Strait, is the town of Ventnor.

The first recorded mention of the town's name, originally appearing as 'Vintnor', dates back to 1617. Prior to this, it was known as Holeway. For most of its history, it was little more than a tiny fishing community, having been described as 'the smallest of small villages' in 1813.

During the 1830s, following a commendatory report submitted by physician Sir James Clark on the beneficial qualities of the climate, Ventnor entered into a period of speculative development. In 1848 a promenade was constructed, followed by a pier and harbour in the 1860s, both of which were short-lived. Another pier was built between 1871 and 1881, but was destroyed by a storm just 10 weeks after its completion. A third pier was constructed in the late 1880s, namely the Royal Victoria Pier. This served as a landing point for passengers visiting on steamships. The pier stood until the late 20th century before being dismantled due to its deteriorated condition.

In 1866 the first of two former railway stations opened in Ventnor. This was the southern terminus of the Isle of Wight Railway line, which connected the town to Ryde at the northern end of the island along its east coast. It was followed, in 1900, by the opening of a second station known initially as Ventnor Town, and later renamed to Ventnor West. The second station was closed in 1952, followed by the closure of the original in 1966. Today, public transport to Ventnor consists of direct buses from Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin, Newport and various other nearby locations.
