The UYI live slash tone is legendary, but very hard to replicate.
Due to the large venues and cranked amps that were present, the wireless sytem coloring the sound, GE-7 adding more compression and gain on top of an already cranked out Jubilee, his gate racks and combined with the cabs pushing alot of air, tubes working with max saturation, natural audio physics that happens in the venue, the big venues creating a natural reverb.. all that adds to create that special tone we all love and adore.
This can be simulated in different ways!
The authentic way to do it, is how slash did it. Jubilee and the GE-7 in the loop, at the max volume possible. This is just impossible for the most of us, because so many things were in his rig to scale it up to stadium show standards, not to mention different things that would add color, and FOH possibly adding EQ or compression etc. Even attenuating your amp wont give the same sound, because so much is happening.
So i've tested alot of different things and come to the conclusion that you can put the Boss GE-7 in front, turn your Jubilee on 10 lead master (essential) and then compress the signal with a BOSS NS-2 gate. This method works on all volume levels, and settings on the amp and ge-7 can be adjusted to your own surroundings and likings. This makes for a consistent UYI live tone at all volume levels. The GE-7 in front is adding all the high end and saturation, maybe like his wireless system did, and the cranked jubilee. And the NS-2 is coloring the tone in a way, that compresses the signal and evens it out, like the GE-7 would in the loop. This gives that very unique dark, yet aggressive swirly haunting slash tone we love.
And that is the setup i use in this video, to demonstrate the beautiful tones we know. The speakers i use is V30's, and my amp is a 1987 2550 Jubilee. The GE-7 is a Japan and the NS-2 is a regular model. I roll off the tone at the neck pickup.
The ge-7 and amp settings in this video was all over the place, not accurate to his settings at all, but that is just a testament to this setup, that it simply works for the intended use. It also makes for a great versatile setup, because you can turn off the NS-2 and get your regular ge-7 tones again with a click. Unfortunately the clean channel wont work as we are using the 10 lead master, so the volume decrease would be too much. So just turn off GE-7 when need to go clean sound, and roll off some volume of your guitar.. or you can go all out and get 2 seperate amps with a switcher.
So i hope you guys enjoy this and find this helpful! After thousands of hours of research this is my endgame setup for THAT tone. Enjoy, have fun and RNFNR.
