Caltech and TII Launch X1: The Ultimate Multirobot Response Team
Caltech's Center for Autonomous Systems and Technologies (CAST) and Abu Dhabi's Technology Innovation Institute (TII) have unveiled X1, which they dub the world's first multirobot system integrating a humanoid and a transforming drone. The core idea is simple: combine the best of walking, driving, and flying into one package to mitigate the drawbacks of each modality.
The system was showcased in an emergency simulation where a modified Unitree G1 humanoid carried M4 (Caltech's multimodal fly/drive robot) like a backpack. The humanoid walked to an elevated spot, bent over, and deployed M4 in drone mode. M4 flew, transformed to drive, encountered an obstacle (a pond), switched back to flight mode to overcome it, and then reached the "emergency" site.
