How did the British transform India from a society governed by customs into a centrally controlled colonial state? #upsc #modernindianhistory #ColonialState #britishruleinindia #judiciary #policesystem #indianarmy #civilservices #bharattarangini
In this lecture (Modern Indian History | Lecture–12), we examine how the British systematically introduced modern institutions — the judiciary, police, army, and civil services — not merely as reforms, but as instruments of imperial control.
This session explains:
• Warren Hastings’ judicial reforms (1772)
• Sadr Diwani Adalat and the role of the Governor-General’s Council
• Emergence of colonial courts and rule of law
• Creation of the police system for law and order
• Evolution of the Company’s army into a standing imperial force
• Birth of civil services as the “steel frame” of the British Empire
• How bureaucracy, law, and coercion worked together to build the colonial state
Rather than viewing these institutions as neutral modern innovations, this lecture critically analyses their role in revenue extraction, surveillance, discipline, and political domination.
This lecture is highly relevant for:
UPSC Prelims & Mains (GS Paper 1 & 2)
