Can a war really start and end in just 38 minutes? ⏱️
It sounds impossible, but in 1896 it actually happened. The Anglo-Zanzibar War is officially recorded as the shortest war in human history, and its story is one of the most shocking examples of how fast history can change.
When the pro-British Sultan of Zanzibar died, his cousin Khalid seized power without British approval. The British Empire responded with a simple ultimatum: step down by 9:00 AM or face military action. Khalid believed they were bluffing. He gathered nearly 3,000 defenders and fortified the palace. That decision would end the war before most people could finish breakfast.
At exactly 9:00 AM, British warships opened fire from the harbor. By 9:02 AM, the palace was in flames. By 9:40 AM, the Sultan’s flag was cut down and the war was officially over.
In just 38 minutes, around 500 defenders were killed, while only one British sailor was injured. A full war, shorter than most YouTube videos.
