January 9 marks the death anniversary of legendary Pakistani Punjabi film actor Sultan Rahi, one of the most iconic figures in the history of Pakistani cinema.
Sultan Rahi ruled Punjabi films during the 1980s, dominating the industry for over 15 years. He set a world record by acting in more than 700 films, including over 500 films as a lead hero, earning a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
He began his film career in 1971, but it was the blockbuster Punjabi film “Bashira” that turned him into a superstar. His iconic pairing with Mustafa Qureshi, especially in the legendary film “Maula Jatt”, created box-office history.
Sultan Rahi received over 150 film awards and worked with top actresses including Asia, Anjuman, Saima, Gori, Neeli, and Babra Sharif.
Tragically, Sultan Rahi was shot dead by unknown assailants near Gujranwala on January 9, 1996, leaving behind a legacy that still lives on in Punjabi cinema.
