Chip Lake, located about 150 km west of Edmonton, is a massive, shallow wetland that serves as one of Central Alberta's most vital staging and nesting grounds for waterfowl. Because the lake is so shallow, it is a haven for "dabblers"—ducks that feed on the surface or by tipping head-first into the water.
Common Waterfowl Species
If you're heading out with binoculars or a camera, keep an eye out for these regulars:
Dabbling Ducks: Mallards, Northern Pintails, American Wigeons, and Blue-winged Teal are abundant during the spring and fall.
Diving Ducks: In the deeper pockets, you’ll find Canvasbacks, Redheads, and Lesser Scaup.
Geese & Swans: Massive flocks of Canada Geese use the lake as a rest stop, and during peak migration (late April and October), you can often spot Tundra Swans and Snow Geese.
Other Waterbirds: The lake also supports American Coots, Horned Grebes, and the occasional Common Loon.
Best Viewing Times
Spring (Late April – May): Best for seeing birds in their vibrant breeding plumage as they return North.
Fall (September – October): The "peak" of migration. The sheer volume of birds is incredible, though they are often in more muted "eclipse" plumage.
Dawn/Dusk: This is when the birds are most active, moving between the water and nearby fields to feed.
Access Points
The Chip Lake Southeast (D2-3) conservation site offers foot access and is an excellent spot for nature viewing and photography. Be prepared for marshy terrain—waterproof boots are a must!
