Captain America is a superhero created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby for Marvel Comics. He first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 on December 20, 1940, published by Timely Comics, Marvel's predecessor. His real name is Steve Rogers, a frail man who was enhanced to peak human perfection by the Super-Soldier Serum after joining the U.S. Army during World War II. Wearing a costume inspired by the American flag and wielding a nearly indestructible shield, he fought against the Axis powers, including his enemy, Red Skull. Near the war’s end, he was accidentally frozen in suspended animation and later revived in modern times. He resumed his role as a hero, became the leader of the Avengers, and struggled to adjust to the new era as a "man out of time.
