Located in the old Serangoon Bus Interchange which was completed in the 1980s, these traffic light heads were manufactured by the General Electric Company for usage on Singapore’s roads before the 1990s, and was once a very common sight in Singapore. They have distinctive black and yellow stripes. However in the 2000s, mass replacement of these old traffic lights began and threatened the survival of these type of traffic lights. By around 2009, this set was the last surviving set in the whole of Singapore, the rest were either replaced or shut down, and those that were shut down were shortly removed thereafter. In 2011, this set of traffic lights were at risk of being gone forever when the old Serangoon bus interchange was closed and relocated to a new bus interchange that was integrated with the then newly completed shopping mall, NEX. This set of traffic lights which was used to cross a small road within the bus interchange, was then switched off once the old bus interchange was closed. It’s fate remained unknown, as the traffic lights were at risk of extinction if the building was demolished, or if it was removed or replaced if the building was refurbished for other purposes. Fortunately, the building was not demolished and instead was kept for refurbishment, and the management in charge of the project decided to keep and preserve this old remaining traffic light which in my opinion is a very good thing, so that the younger generation of Singaporeans can get to know how traffic lights in Singapore of the past looked like, and the older generations of Singaporeans can better relive the past when they have the opportunity to see them themselves. Although several modifications have been made to this traffic light such as replacing crossing buttons and the signal head lighting into LEDs, it is largely original and still better than having it replaced or removed. I hope it would last long for years to come, and let us appreciate these old traffic lights while they are still here. I understand my channel mainly caters to lift enthusiasts though, so if you really can’t appreciate them it is Ok. I like filming stuff that is closely tied with the lift community that features stuff that is going extinct, including the transport community which includes the traffic light community, so upon finding about this heritage gem I simply had to film it.
