Today, in our sports encyclopedia series we will talk about how to play Jungle Chess.
Jungle chess is a chess variant that is played on a specialized jungle chessboard.
The Jungle game board represents a jungle terrain with dens, traps "set" around dens, and rivers.
The basic objective of the game for each player is to move any one of their animals into their opponent’s den, also known as the base.
The game begins with laying out the board and each player picking a color and placing their animal pieces on their matching start positions on their side of the board.
A player is randomly chosen to begin the game and then the turns alternate.
In their turn, a player must move one of their pieces and then the opponent does the same.
All pieces only move one square in any direction except diagonally and they may not jump over the pieces nor share the same space.
Every piece is a different animal and they have different power rankings.
The ranks go from mouse at rank 1 to the elephant at rank 8.
Players can capture other players’ animals if their animal piece comes across an equal or lower rank animal by moving and landing onto that piece.
The only exception is an elephant cannot capture the mouse but a mouse can capture an elephant.
Players are also allowed to capture their opponent’s piece that is higher in rank if that piece is on one of the traps set on the player’s side of the board.
The pieces that are captured are removed from the board and cannot be used again till the end of the game.
The mice in the game are allowed to move over the water spaces.
A mouse is not allowed to capture any of the other player’s animals from water to land or from land to water.
A mouse is allowed to capture another mouse if both of them are in the water.
Tigers and Lions are allowed to jump over the water horizontally or vertically.
The jump involves jumping from the land square on the edge of the water to the next land square on the other side where they can capture any piece that might be there.
Lion or Tiger are not allowed to jump if there is any player’s mouse in the way.
A player cannot move their animal back to their own den.
The first player that manages to move one of their animals into their opponent’s den is declared the winner.
