The Western Grey Kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus) is the most widespread and abundant of all of the large kangaroo species in Australia. The genus name Macropus means ‘big foot’. Western Grey Kangaroos are most active from late afternoon until the early morning, and rest during the day in the shelter of shrubs and trees. They usually dig a hole for their hip to make themselves more comfortable while resting. While feeding, most often on grass, Western Grey Kangaroos move slowly forward with an unusual ‘five-footed’ gait, using their tails and forearms to prop while swinging the huge hind feet forward. Kangaroos keep their fur in order by grooming – this female Western Grey Kangaroo is using a special claw on the inside of her hind foot to comb through her fur and to remove pesky kangaroo ticks.
