The 1989 Pacific Typhoon Season was often left in the shadows as one of many underrated seasons in the Western Pacific. With 36 tropical storms in total of which a handful reached Category 5 or Category 4 status with close proximity to the Philippines, Vietnam, China, Japan and also notably, Thailand. Notable storms of the seasons were Typhoon Cecil, Super Typhoon Gordon, Super Typhoon Angela and Super Typhoon Gay which effectively made a rare strong landfall in Thailand and crossed into the North Indian Ocean causing destruction in India.
