Check out the new exclusive preview look alpha work in progress PS5 Pro footage from the upcoming Control: Resonant running Remedy's Northlight Engine. This footage has been provided by Remedy and edited by us. This game is a supernatural post-apocalyptic single player open world action RPG with hack and slash combat. Control Resonant moves away from the investigative feel of the first game and leans into a more psychological thriller vibe. While Control Resonant shares the DNA of its predecessor, it can be compared to Alan Wake 2 for its surreal narrative depth and atmospheric world-building within the same universe. However, its combat shift toward Dylan Faden’s volatile nature draws strong parallels to the aggressive power fantasy of Returnal and the supernatural anti-hero feel of Infamous Second Son. It balances the creative environmental manipulation seen in Dishonored with a psychological intensity similar to Hellblade, specifically regarding how Dylan’s unstable mental state and internal voices directly distort the game’s reality and mechanics.
Description:
Set in the aftermath of the Hiss invasion, Control Resonant flips the script by placing players in control of Dylan Faden. No longer the catatonic prisoner of the Panopticon, Dylan has been "rehabilitated" by the FBC under Jesse’s watchful eye. However, his mind remains a battleground. As a new, frequency-based threat known as The Resonance begins to dissolve the boundaries of the Oldest House, Dylan is the only one "tuned" finely enough to stop it.
First Impressions:
🌆 A New Perspective: From Interior Labyrinth to Urban Warscape
Stepping out of the brutalist hallways of the Oldest House into the warped streets of Manhattan is a total shock to the system. Seven years after the original game, the scale has evolved from isolated corridors to dense, handcrafted city zones. Thanks to the Northlight Engine, the draw distances are massive, yet the world feels incredibly tactile. You can feel the detail in every fracturing skyscraper as gravity anomalies tear through the skyline. The new seamless dialogue system with your handler keeps the momentum alive; conversations unfold naturally as you parkour through gravity-defying arenas.
⚔️ Combat: Relentless 60 FPS Aggression
The combat is a pure adrenaline shot, and it’s remarkably fluid. Even with debris flying everywhere and dozens of enemies on screen, the game maintains a solid 60 FPS, making the Action RPG label feel earned. Playing as Dylan Faden (with Jesse now in a crucial supporting role) feels dangerous. Using the Aberrant (his transforming melee weapon) creates a lethal rhythm. You smash enemies to build energy, unleash a psychic ability to stun them, and then dive in for an execution that juices up your next melee swing. It’s an aggressive loop that rewards staying in the enemy's face rather than hiding behind cover.
🌀 Deep RPG Systems: The Gap and Specialization
The most impressive feature is The Gap. By simply pressing the D-pad, you instantly drop into Dylan’s psyche to tweak your build. This isn't just a menu; it's a dreamlike hub where the RPG elements shine. Specialization feels heavy and consequential because you cannot unlock everything in a single playthrough. Every Resonant boss you defeat acts as a major crossroads. Do you take the supernatural ability for crowd-controlling Mold Turrets or do you spec into pure, raw Aberrant damage? These choices define Dylan’s identity as he navigates a world where the lighting shifts from stark, dark interiors to the blinding, distorted sun of a fracturing New York.
Gameplay Features:
The Synchrony System: The game introduces a dual-frequency mechanic. Players must balance Dylan’s internal resonance; leaning into the Hiss-frequency increases raw damage and chaos, while aligning with Polaris provides defensive shielding and environmental stability.
Deep Psychological Narrative: The story is a deep dive into Dylan’s trauma and his complex relationship with his sister. Through "Echo Memories," players explore the Prime Candidate Program's dark past, revealing that Dylan’s connection to the Board might be deeper (and more dangerous) than Jesse’s.
Open World Exploration: Large portions of the game take place within the Astral Plane, which has become a fractured open world. Exploration is non-linear, requiring Dylan to "tune" into different frequencies to unlock new sectors.
Release Date and Platforms: Coming in Q2 2026 to PS5, Xbox and PC.
