Eurasian Rock Pipit (Anthus petrosus) - Brighton, October 2020

Описание: The Rock Pipit is a bird of northern Europe and is found on rocky shorelines throughout the UK & Ireland, where it is resident.

Although similar to other Pipits like the Meadow & Water Pipits, the Rock Pipit has more of a dark olive colouring which blends in perfectly among the large pebbles & stones of a beach like Brighton.

If you look closely the Pipit quite often wiggles or plumps up its tail, a little like Wagtails.

Rock Pipits builds cup-like nest in rocks and crevices from dried grass, leaves and seaweed and lined with animal hair, fine grasses and feathers. In Brighton, these can be high up in the cliff faces that are a feature of the City.

Their diet includes invertebrates such as snails, slugs, crustaceans, beetles and small fish, although they will also take seeds and small beetles.

One almost unique feature of the Rock Pipit, is they will enter a rivals territory to co-operate in assisting the occupying resident/s repel an intruder, a characteristic it shares only with the African Fiddler Crab.
