BFER 'Citizen Science: Testing the Water' project lead Anne Carter (Freshwater Habitats Trust) discusses the results from the 2021 Brecks eDNA survey.
'Citizen Science: Testing the Water' is a BFER project utilising new technologies to involve local communities in the collection of important biological and environmental data needed to protect life in freshwater. Through the project, volunteers across the Brecks carried out Environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys, sampling ponds, streams, ditches and river headwater streams. They also used rapid water quality test kits to test for pollution that would otherwise go undetected.
The results from this surveying have been mapped to identify water quality and dispersal of key red list species in the BFER project area to facilitate improved awareness and better conservation management practices.
