I've been having all kinds of problems filling the tank of my 2003 Ford E-350 7.3 Diesel. Looking at the tank while it was on the vehicle was hard to do, so I dropped it to have a closer look. I took the tank with me on a trailer to fuel it and see if I could reproduce the problem.
I'm not sure if this vehicle is supposed to have an EVAP canister or not. I see mixed literature on this. I went to the Ford dealership to look at new fuel tank ventline modules, but they seem to have the same airflow restrictions that the old ones do. I even removed the insides and reamed out the hole to allow more airflow, and it still shoots back.
I understand the function of these vents (to keep fuel from escaping during a rollover) but why the restriction? When I remove the vents, it fuels fine. Am I missing something? The 3/8' hose doesn't make a difference if it's attached or not.
UPDATE: This tank didn't actually have a breather valve! It was supposed to be next to the filler neck, but you will see in the video that it isn't actually there. Those white things are vents that allow air in as the fuel is consumed, but they don't allow enough air in the compensate for the volume of fuel entering during refueling. I ended up welding one on and reconnecting the stock vent tube. Works like a charm now.
