National Strike In France Causes Transportation Disruption

Police officers wearing riot gear were seen dispersing and clashing with protesters in Paris during a nationwide strike against the government's austerity measures.

According to the news reports, union workers plan to strike in multiple cities, with public transport set to be disrupted and officials warning of potential disturbances.

The protests come a week after French President Emmanuel Macron appointed his ally, Sebastien Lecornu, as Prime Minister, who promised a fresh approach amid an ongoing political crisis.

Last week, violent protests and clashes erupted across several French cities. The Block Everything protests arose two days after Francois Bayrou was ousted as prime minister in a National Assembly confidence vote over austerity plans to reduce the country's huge debt.

Earlier, organisers of the Block Everything campaign had called on supporters to disrupt transport, schools and public services in opposition to Bayrou's proposed austerity package.

Authorities deployed 80,000 police officers nationwide, including 6,000 in Paris, amid predictions that as many as 100,000 people could take part. Dozens were arrested in Paris, Nantes, Montpellier and Rennes.
