Fire roared in a wide stone hearth, casting amber light across scarred tables and low beams blackened by smoke and age. The air was thick with the scent of spiced ale, roasting meat, and wet wool drying by the flames. Laughter crashed against the walls as loudly as tankards slammed against wood.

At the heart of it all stood Lysera.

She moved between tables with practiced ease, sleeves rolled, hair tied high, her expression calm despite the chaos around her. Most saw only a tavernkeeper — strong hands, sharp eyes, a voice that carried when needed. A few, usually the ones who stayed too long or watched too closely, noticed the faint shimmer behind her back when the firelight struck just right.

On the counter rested a massive glass jug filled with a softly glowing brew. Cinnamon, herbs, and something older swirled inside. No one asked what it was made of. They only knew it warmed more than the body.

“Careful,” Lysera said, setting down a full mug.
“This one makes memories loud.”

The drink flowed freely. Farmers fresh from the fields shared benches with travelers still dusted in road grime. A pair of mercenaries argued over dice near the door, voices rising until someone laughed and bought the next round. In the corner, a battered lute struggled to keep up with a crowd that sang louder than it played.

Outside, the wind clawed at the walls.

Inside, boots steamed, cloaks loosened, shoulders relaxed.

Long before the tavern had a name, people gathered here to survive the night. Back then, the hearth was small, the walls thinner. Lysera had already been there — older than the wood, quieter than the fire. She learned early that warmth alone was not enough. People needed noise. Food. Stories. Someone to remind them they were not alone.

A scarred sailor raised his mug.

“To roads that didn’t kill us!”

Cheers answered him.

A woman near the hearth told a story that changed with every telling. Someone cried laughing. Someone else listened in silence, letting the noise wash over them like a tide.

Lysera watched it all from behind the counter.

She knew this place did something strange to people. Grudges softened. Strangers spoke like old friends. Even the loneliest travelers stayed longer than planned. Some left changed. Others never left at all.

A young man, barely old enough to shave, leaned forward and asked,
“Is it true this place never freezes?”

Lysera met his eyes and smiled faintly.

“It freezes,” she said. “Just not while we’re breathing together.”

The fire crackled, throwing sparks up the chimney.

As the night deepened, mugs emptied and refilled. Songs grew slower, then louder again. Someone fell asleep near the hearth, head resting on folded arms. No one bothered him.

Near dawn, the glow in the jug dimmed. The fire burned lower. The storm outside eased.

When the door finally opened and people stepped back into the cold, they carried something with them — not heat, but steadiness.

And behind them, the Frosted Stag remained.

Waiting.
Breathing.
