Sappho (born about 620 BCE) was a lyric poet from Eresos, a seaside village of Lesbos island, Greece.
Plato referred to her as the “10th muse”.
Aristotle reports that she “was honored although she was a woman.”
The Greeks seem to have thought of her as the female counterpart of Homer.
Her name survived through history as a symbol of love between women and as an icon of the erotic.
In Eresos she is still honoured today. Every September women from all over the world gather at the International Eressos Women's Festival.
Eresos is a beautiful village, with a long history, unique culture and breathtaking landscapes. It is the ideal base to explore Lesvos island, starting from the picturesque Sigri with the unique Petrified Forest (UNESCO Global Geopark). But its most expensive jewel is its famous beach: 3 km of silver sand!
