The Toyota Supra A80 Turbo is powered by the legendary 2JZ-GTE sequential twin-turbo engine, known for its strong performance and exceptional durability and tunability. The fourth-generation Supra (A80), produced from 1993 to 2002, was also intentionally built with lightweight materials to improve its power-to-weight ratio.
Engine and performance
Engine: 3.0L twin-turbocharged inline-6, code-named 2JZ-GTE. It has an iron engine block and an aluminum head.
Sequential twin-turbo system: Unlike a parallel system, the Supra's turbos work sequentially to reduce turbo lag and provide a linear powerband. One turbo provides boost at low RPMs, and the second activates around 4,000 RPM, allowing both to work together at high engine speeds.
Horsepower and torque:
U.S. and European markets: Up to 326 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque.
Japanese market (RZ): Officially rated at 276 hp, due to a "gentleman's agreement" among Japanese automakers at the time.
Acceleration: The turbo model was capable of 0–60 mph in approximately 4.6 to 5.1 seconds, depending on the model and transmission.
Top speed: Electronically limited to 155 mph on export models.
Drivetrain and chassis
Transmission: The turbo model featured a robust Getrag V160 6-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic.
Drivetrain: The Supra is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car.
Suspension: The car features a double-wishbone suspension with aluminum control arms, giving it world-class handling for its era.
Brakes: The turbo model was fitted with high-performance 12.5-inch ventilated disc brakes, an advanced system for its time. A 1997 test by Car and Driver magazine found the Supra had the best braking performance of any production car tested, a title it held until 2004.
Construction: Toyota used lightweight materials to reduce the car's weight by about 200 pounds compared to the previous A70 generation. These materials included aluminum for the hood, roof (on targa models), and parts of the suspension.
Interior
Driver-focused design: The cockpit features a "1990s" aesthetic, with a simple, functional layout and a driver-focused center console.
Standard equipment: Despite its age, the Supra came with amenities such as dual airbags, leather upholstery, and climate control.
Targa top: Most U.S. and some European turbo models were sold with a removable targa-style "Sport Roof" panel.
