Peterboro, NY Gerrit Smith, to circumvent the $250/40 acres voting requirements for African Americans, (100 for white men) he Emancipated and gave land to over 3,000 freed and enslaved african americans. He and John Brown established Timbuctoo, a freed black settlement in North Elba, NY. Gerrit Smith's Peterboro estate held New York's first Anti-slavery society's Convention. Lastly, Peter Gist-Still, the author of the Kidnapped and The Ransom spoke at Gerrit Smith's events. Gerrit helped Peter raise the $5000 ransom his family's slave-holder demanded for the freedom of Peter's wife and children. In August 1850 Gerrit Smith and Frederick Douglass organized a 2 day convention of abolitionists to protest Congressional debate on the proposed Fugitive Slave Act, 2,000 attended. Join us Sun.
