Confession: Heidelberg Catechism, Lord's Day 16, QA 40-44
Scripture: Luke 22:39-46
Preacher: Rev. Jacques Roets
The Heidelberg Catechism:
Lord's Day 2
Q.40 Why did Christ have to suffer death?
A. Because God's justice and truth require it: nothing else could pay for our sins except the death of the Son of God.
Q.41 Why was he "buried"?
A. His burial testifies that he really died.
Q.42 Since Christ has died for us, why do we still have to die?
A. Our death is not a payment for our sins, but only a dying to sins and an entering into eternal life.
Q.43 What further benefit do we receive from Christ's sacrifice and death on the cross?
A. By his power our old man is crucified, put to death, and buried with him, so that the evil desires of the flesh may no longer rule us, but that instead we may offer ourselves as a sacrifice of thanksgiving to him.
Q.44 Why does the creed add, "He descended into hell"?
A. To assure me during attacks of deepest dread and temptation that Christ my Lord, by suffering unspeakable anguish, pain, and terror of soul, on the cross but also earlier, has delivered me from hellish anguish and torment.
Scripture Reading:
Luke 22:39-46 (King James Version)
39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. 41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
