Plot:
Set in 1871, six convicts escape from Carson City prison during a brutal Sierra Nevada winter. One dies in the blizzard. The remaining five—Jim Canfield (Glenn Ford), Johnny Greer, Edward “Limey” Cockerell, Matt Anderson, and the unstable Clyde Maxwell—discover a small settlement by Monte Diablo Lake inhabited solely by women, whose men are away prospecting for silver.

Led by the formidable Granny (Ethel Barrymore), the women begrudgingly offer the fugitives shelter in a cabin, though they cleverly hide their firearms. Canfield, wrongly convicted for murder and accused of stealing $40,000, is secretly seeking the man who framed him—Rudy Schaeffer, who lives in the settlement and is engaged to Marcia Stoddard (Gene Tierney).
As tensions mount, Canfield’s restrained integrity begins to stand in sharp contrast to the hardened criminals he escaped with. A barn fire and a near-rape by Maxwell further shift the dynamic—earning grudging trust from the women and sparking burgeoning romance between Canfield and Marcia.
Eventually, Marcia discovers the stolen money tucked away in Rudy’s trunk and attempts to hand it over to save Canfield. A final confrontation ensues: two convicts are killed, Greer falls to his death, and Canfield forces a confession from Rudy—who then tries to shoot him, prompting Canfield to kill in self-defense.

When law enforcement arrives, Granny and the women deceive them into believing all the graves belong to the convicts. Canfield and Marcia ride off together as the lake earns its name: Convict Lake
