Описание: What was the “Pickett’s Charge of the West.”? You might know the disastrous Pickett’s Charge during the Battle of Gettysburg when General Lee ordered General Pickett to charge straight into the Union Lines, resulting in 6,555 Confederate casualties in less than an hour. But just over 1 year later, a very similar situation occurred in the Western Theater. You see After escaping Confederate forces at the Battle of Spring Hill, Union General Schofield withdrew to Franklin, where his army quickly built strong defensive lines backed by artillery. Confederate General John Bell Hood, enraged by the missed opportunity and desperate to stop the Union before they reached Nashville, brashly ordered a massive two-mile wide open plain assault using 20,000 troops. As you can imagine, the wide open terrain, with no artillery support, and strong union artillery defensive positions resulted in a devastating outcome. The incoming confederates got absolutely decimated. Despite horrific losses, Confederate soldiers bravely carried on the attack, and surprisingly breached the Union defenses. Though the Confederates were eventually pushed back, resulting in a catastrophic casualty count of 6,200, 1,700 of which were killed.
