Here is the unmistakable sound of the Morse Code SOS distress signal: three dots, three dashes and three dots.
This distress signal or distress message is very well known - it is known globally, but what is less well known is that the signal should not be sent as S O S, but as a single character . . . _ _ _ . . .
When the SOS signal is sent as a single character it has a very different sound to when the letters are sent individually.
The SOS signal was chosen because the character could not be confused with other Morse code procedural characters, and it was very distinctive.
When it was introduced, the letters SOS were used to signify it, but it could just as easily have been IWD, 3V and a number of other combinations, but SOS is the most memorable.
Also the letters do not stand for anything, although many people liked to think it stood for "Save Our Ship" or "Save Our Souls" but this was not the case.
