একবার মা লক্ষী ভগবান বিষ্ণুর সাথে বিবাদ করে সমুদ্রে চলে যান এবং সমুদ্ররাজ রত্নাকরের পুত্রী রুপে জন্ম নেন । বৈকুন্ঠ থেকে লক্ষীর প্রত্যাবর্তনে দেবতারা তাদের সকল ধনসম্পদ ঐশ্বর্য হারায় ।

তখন তারা ত্রিদেব মানে ব্রহ্মা বিষ্ণু শিবের শরণাগত হোন । তাদের পরামর্শে দেবতারা সমুদ্র মন্থনের আয়োজন করেণ । কিন্তু এই কষ্ট সাধ্য কাজ শুধুমাত্র দেবতাদের করা কষ্ট সাধ্য তাই ভগবান শিবের পরামর্শে অসুরদেরও সমুদ্র মন্থনে আহবান করা হয় । অসুরেরা এই শর্তে রাজী হয় সমুদ্র মন্থন থেকে যা প্রাপ্ত হবে তার অর্ধেক অসুরদের দিতে হবে।যথা সময়ে সমুদ্র মন্থন শুরু হল ।

মন্দার পর্ব কে বাসুকী নাগ দ্বারা বেষ্টিত করে যখন মন্থনের প্রথম দরি টানা হল তখন মন্দার পর্বত নিচের দিকে যেতে শুরু করল।এমতাবস্থায় ভগবান বিষ্ণু কুর্ম অবতার গ্রহন করল অর্থাত্ কচ্ছপের রুপ ধারণ করলেন এবং পর্বত কে নিচের পিঠের উপর স্থাপন করলেন । এতে করে পর্বত টি নিচের দিকে যাওয়া থেকে বেঁচে গেল।সমুদ্র মন্থনে সর্ব প্রথমই হলাহল নামে এক বিষ উঠে আসল।

যার ফলে সমস্ত ব্রহ্মান্ডের বায়ু বিষাক্ত হয়ে গেল।অনেক দেবতা আর অসুর সেই স্থানেই মুর্ছা গেল।তখন সেই বিষ ব্রহ্মার কাছে গেল, ব্রহ্মাও এই বিষ কে গতি প্রদান করতে অসমর্থ হল। তারপর বৈকুন্ঠে বিষ্ণুর কাছে গেল, বিষ্ণুও অপারগতা প্রকাশ করল । শেষ পর্যন্ত শিব সমস্ত সংসারের মঙ্গলের জন্য এই হলাহল বিষ পান করল। তখন মা পার্বতি ছুটে এসে ভগবান শিবের কন্ঠ টিপে ধরলেন যেন মহাদেবের দেহ পর্যন্ত এই বিষ না যায় ।
বিষ গুলো তখন গলাতেই আটকে থাকল এবং মহাদেবের কন্ঠ নীল হয়ে গেল । দেবতা, মানব, দানব সবাই ভগবান শিবের জয় জয়কার করল এবং ব্রহ্মা বিষ্ণু মহাদেবকে নীলকন্ঠ নামে ভূষিত করল ।এর পর মহাদেবের দেহে বিষক্রিয়া শুরু হলে তিনি ছোট বাচ্চায় রুপ নিলেন এবং কান্না করতে শুরু করলেন । বলে রাখা ভাল এগুলো সবই মহাকাল সদাশিবের লীলা ।
এরপর ভগবান শিবের কান্না দেখে মা পার্বতি নতুন রুপে অবতীর্ণ হলেন এবং ছোট শিশু রুপী মহাদেব কে স্তন পান করালেন । এতে করে ভগবান শিবের বিষক্রিয়া কমল এবং তিনি পুনরায় সদাশিব রুপে ফিরে এলেন ....



Lord Shiva is the supreme God among five important deities of Hindu religion. He is therefore also termed as'Mahadev'. People adress him by hundreds of names and'Neelkanth'is one of them.

Let us know why Lord Shiva is also called'Neelkanth'.

According to the religious scriptures, during churning of the milky ocean, the poison or 'Halahal' also came out of the ocean which terrified the Gods and Demons. It was so toxic that it might have destroyed all of creation. Lord Shiva then came to rescue and swallowed the poison and held it in his throat. Lord Shiva therefore became 'Neelkanth'.

The swallowing of poison could have burn the throat but keeping the Moon and the Ganges in the lock of hair soothed Lord Shiva. This episode teaches that one should keep a good control over his speech which comes out of the throat. This control can however be exercised only when the Moon of Wisdom and the Ganges of the Knowledge is placed in our mind. Lord Shiva kept the Moon and the Ganges at the centre of thought and remained calm and peaceful. So use your wisdom and knowledge carefully to control your thoughts and speech and avoid clashes.
