At 24, in 1798, she had a vision of Jesus offering her a crown of flowers or thorns; choosing the latter, she suffered physical pain and bleeding from her head, akin to Christ’s Passion, a grace shared by mystics like St. Catherine of Siena. Entering the convent in 1802 despite poverty, she faced severe trials during her novitiate, including misunderstandings, jealousy, and accusations from nuns who couldn’t comprehend her gifts—such as hearing distant conversations, perceiving rule violations, and weeping for humanity’s sins. Her frequent Communion and delicate health fueled further suspicion, yet she served humbly, viewing sufferings as divine sanctification. A persistent heart pain from 1802 later manifested as a cross-shaped mark in 1812.
