William Hanson's Guide to Ironing

First of all, never tumble-dry shirts unless you want it look horridly creased and crumpled. The heat from the dryer will lock in the creases. Unless using a luxury ironing system with executive blow and suck function, you should always iron shirts whilst slightly damp: air-dry them until they reach the right slight dampness.

For coloured or patterned shirts, iron on the reverse side (inside out). This will help them retain colour for longer.

Start by ironing the back of the collar. Iron from one side, to the middle; then turn over and iron the other side, to the middle. Repeat on the front side of the collar, if you think it needs it. Never iron straight across the collar as this pushes the fibre across to one end and will, over time, result in an uneven collar.

Next, if you want to, iron the yoke of the shirt (the shoulders), feeding the shoulders through the pointed end of the ironing board. This step is optional, however.

Next iron the sleeves (both sides), including inside the cuffs.

Then irong the back of the shirt, hooking it up and against the narrower portion of the board.

And finally, iron the front (one side at a time)

Air shirts for a couple of hours before putting away to make sure they are not damp when they go back in the wardrobe.
