ARISTOCRATS SITE / YAMAÇ EVLER
Yamaçevler (Terrace Houses), located within the borders of the Ephesus Archaeological site, consists of seven ancient Roman houses. These very well-preserved houses were constructed on the terraces across the slopes of Mount Koressos.
The Yamaçevler (Terrace Houses) region, where the prominent people of Ephesus lived in ancient times, was used as a cemetery in the Hellenistic period before being converted into a living space by the Romans. When the new settlers built their houses, they used the materials from their predecessors.
People dwelled in these ancient houses that were built AD 1, making some changes over the years until they ultimately abandoned them.
These two storey houses, which vividly reflect the wealth of the inhabitants were built in around an open peristyle yard. The floors are colored mosaics and the walls are marble. Besides, they are decorated with frescoes depicting mythological scenes It is understood that there were fountains and central heating systems in the houses.
WHILE YOU’RE HERE
The house of theVirgin Mary which is considered to be the Christian pilgrimage is also located on Mt. Koressos.
It is believed that St. John brought Virgin Mary to Ephesus four or six years after Jesus died. Upon German nun A. Katherina Emerich’s visions of the house, Lazarist missionaries did research and rediscovered the building in 1891 and they confirmed that Mother Mary spent her last days here. The cross planned and domed building was restored. Since Pope Paul VI’s visit in 1967, every year on August 15th, a ceremony has been organized in the shrine, which is also considered sacred by Muslims.
