🔹Definition of Gauging after preparation:
The process of measuring the apical diameter of the prepared canal to determine whether the canal is adequately enlarged and well-shaped. It’s done by gently inserting K-file (e.g., #25, #30…) to working length after preparation to feel the file is snugly fitted.
🔹 Purpose of gauging:
To confirm your final apical size (master apical file).
To verify that you have not over-enlarged or under-prepared the canal.
To check for a uniform taper and smooth path for obturation.
🔹False Gauging (False Resistance):
Sometimes gauging can be misleading, giving a false feeling of resistance due to:
Debris compacted in the apical area.
Remaining pulp tissue.
Irregular or narrow apical constriction.
Canal curvature causing lateral contact with the file.
👉 That’s why determining the initial apical file (IAF) early is essential, it gives a reliable reference for your true canal diameter.
🔹Importance of Knowing the Initial File (IAF):
It tells you the real apical size before shaping.
Guides how far to enlarge safely.
Prevents under or over-instrumentation & false gauging later.
In Summary *
Always determine your IAF.
Gauging confirms your apical size after shaping.
Be aware of false gauging.
