How we approach the shas and each detail to understand it can best be summed up by the Chazan Ish in his book on Faith and Trust. Many Daf Yomi shiurim are superficial and too fast to give you a deep understanding of the Talmudic point. We are going to go the other way and break down each point and explain it in depth. Our main books to help understand each point is from the Chazan Ish's Beurim writings and the Vilna Goan's Beur, which beaks down each halachic point sugya by sugya in the shas.
Chazan Ish, Faith and Trust from Chapter 2 on Morality and Halacha
“In truth, if laboring over the clarification of a halacha plants in the heart love of the law specifically in regard to the halacha one is dealing with, it also increases a general love of clarifying the rulings in all the laws of the Torah. The emotional identification with the importance of the details of a mitzvah needs to be acquired and is not intrinsic to human nature.” (2:8)
“The main way to heal these illnesses of the soul is to delve into the halacha meticulously and go into all its details until these will instill in the person complete love for the law.
Rabbi Yisrael Salanter didn’t view the general exertion in acquiring fear of G-d as the main thing, but rather that the main thing is lacking if one has not learned and has not exerted oneself to understand the halachot of Choshen Mishpat, and even if one has gone over the material quickly and superficially, one has not yet acquired what is needed in order to love the law and to devote oneself to it.
In-depth study of halacha, to the point of reaching a clear ruling in all the detailed cases that emanate from it, is a ceaseless labor requiring many years of diligent study. For the acquisition of this in-depth learning is the final result of Torah Study. Our Sages went so far as to say that it cannot be acquired by irregular study, or without investing effort. They further said that the Torah is acquired by fourty-eight ways and means – all of which are moves beyond the ways of nature.” (2:9)
