On a leisurely evening, I walked for an hour from the riverside of Tennozu in Tokyo, passing the Shinagawa Bridge and following the old Tōkaidō road southward. Along the way, I passed riverside restaurants glowing with lights, bustling traffic on the streets, quiet shopping arcades closed for the night, and typically Japanese deserted alleys.
The old Tōkaidō, in fact, was developed in Keichō 6 (1601), the year after Tokugawa Ieyasu’s victory at the Battle of Sekigahara, even before the formal establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate. It served as a vital route for people, horses, and information between Edo and Kyoto, and between Edo and Osaka, under the institution of the relay horse system (tenma-sei).
This video was recorded in stereo. Wearing headphones will give you a stronger sense of immersion, and I hope you can feel the tranquility of a Japanese summer midnight.
