It covers from Cumberland (West Hump) to Yoder/Garrett.

HISTORY of the Mance Post Office:
The Mance Post Office served as an official United States Post Office from 1892 to 1928. It remains as a historical structure preserved for future generations. It is presently in the process of being restored by local Amish neighbors using Pennsylvania Hemlock which is the wood originally used during the construction of the building. We believe the actual building was built during the Civil War era during construction of the original Sand Patch Tunnel. Local lore in the area is that the building was used as a station for local soldiers going off to fight in the Union Army against the Confederates during the Civil War. A cemetery very near by contains the graves of Civil War soldiers who fought for the Union.
The tunnel at Sand Patch was not completed until 1871, AFTER the Civil War so there would have been NO through traffic. However the line was extant and used from Manila to Cumberland during construction to bring supplies to the tunnel during it's construction.
A team track was located at Mance up until the 1980's. It is speculated that milk and other local farm commodities were loaded on this track which abutted to the Post Office.
The advent of the motor car did in the need for a local post office, so post 1928 mail in the area was handled via Rural Free Delivery from Meyersdale's Post Office. During its operation mail would have been hooped to passing mail trains from the Mance Post Office.
The building was built as a duplex with a 2nd floor balcony. The Post Office/Station area was directly behind the double doors on the lower floor on the south (railroad west) side of the building. Where the middle window is now was originally another door entrance for the residence on the 2nd floor. With how the staircases were arranged inside we believe a General Store operated separately from the Post Office to some degree, with all residence rooms located on the 2nd floor. There were originally 2 entrances at the front of the building, and 2 separate entrances from the REAR of the building plus evidence of a door opening out to the 2nd floor porch. The 2nd floor porch we speculate was removed in 1928 when the Post Office function was removed from the building. During its present reconstruction the original Post Office entrance and rear "exit" are being maintained. Future owners will be able to easily restore the General Store & private residence entrances should they wish. The original Hemlock framing for those entrances remains behind the newly refurbished original walls.
The refurbished 2025 Post Office once again has its 2nd level front porch. (although it is likely the original top porch was not covered.. awaiting the discovery of some early photographs at Mance so if you have any please contact Acme Cinematography!!!
