Earlier in the game, Chicago's Willson Contreras was hit by a pitch and subsequently was called out at second base for violating the bona fide slide rule in interfering with Pittsburgh shortstop Kevin Newman. During the subsequent half-inning, Pittsburgh's Dustin Fowler was hit by a pitch and half an inning after that, Kris Bryant was hit by a first-pitch sinker from JT Brubaker, prompting Gibson to meet with his crew and issue warnings to both teams, during which Borzello was ejected from the dugout.
