New KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure Martin Meyer says they won't negotiate with the construction mafia as he's setting up a task team to deal with this. KZN has had many cases where criminal groups use violence to threaten projects, demanding a share in the profit. UCT lecturer Gundo Maswime says the industry is brimming with hitmen in KZN and prison-linked gangs in Cape Town. This, he adds, makes it the most dangerous space to operate in.
