World war one was the start of the modern era. The war that saw four of Europe's most prominent empires, Russia, Austria, Germany and the Ottomans fall. National states came in their place, and the world would never be the same, as ideology took the place that monarchy had once held. The consequences of this war are immense, which raises the questions, what if it didn't happen? Or at least, what if it was delayed?

Now I don't think fully preventing a war is possible, but I do consider it very well possible that the war in 1914 was avoided, if the statemen that be had recognized and acted in defense of peace at the time. This would not solve Europe's fundamental issues. Germany insecurity, Austrian and Ottoman instability, Russian power, Italian Irredenism, French Revancism and Britain wanting to remain the world's top dog, but even a small delay could have interesting consequences in how the war would develop.
