These deep fried Wonton dumplings 油炸中式饺子, are delicious and easy to make. They are crunchy, loaded with flavor and taste. These dumplings can be folded simply or crinkled to give texture.
Chinese fusion dumplings were served at a Chinese New Year celebration called Gung Haggis Fat Choy. It's a unique event celebrating Lunar New Year and Scottish poet Robbie Burns on the anniversary of his birthday.The Chinese Fusion Dumpling uses traditional Chinese ingredients like kholrabi cabbage, soy sauce and salty, fermented daikon radish. The Scottish ingredient is haggish, which is made of sheep organs and oatmeal with assorted spices. By substituting the haggis with ground pork or ground chicken, this recipe becomes a traditional Chinese Wonton Dumpling. Serve these dumplings as an appetizer or a tasty snack. Enjoy! Recipe is below:
DEEP FRIED WONTON DUMPLINGS 油炸中式饺子
4 to 6 oz. haggis (or ground pork or ground chicken)
3 to 5 tablespoons cooking oil
1 to 2 tablespoons chopped ginger
1 kohlrobi cabbage
2 celery stalks
2 carrots
1 onion
1/3 cup fermented daikon radish (optional)
1/2 cup chicken broth (or use water)
2 to 3 tablespoons light soy sauce (aka regular soy sauce)
1/2 teaspoon salt or salt to taste
2 to 3 cups peanut oil (or other cooking oil)
PREPARATION
Cut off skin of the kholrobi and dice into small pieces. Continue to dice the celery sticks, carrots, onion and fermented daikon radish. Chop ginger and garlic into small pieces. Prepare chicken broth or use water with chicken soup base.
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat a wok or pan at medium to medium high heat. Add cooking oil to slightly heat up. Add ginger and stir fry briefly. Add chopped celery, carots, onion an fermented daikon radidh. Stir fry briefly and then add haggis, ground pork or ground chicken. Stir fry briefly. Add soy sauce and salt. Add chicken broth or water. Bring liquid to a boil and let reduce down. Put filling in a bowl to cool off.
WRAPPING DUMPLINGS
To make large size dumplings, buy large size 12" by 12" egg roll wrappers. Use a bowl to cut out large size dumpling wrappers. Add 2 tablespoons filling for each dumpling. Make sure dumplings don't leak by squeezing the edges tightly.
For smaller dumplings, buy the smaller ready cut round Shanghai
wrappers. Put in only 1 tablespoon of filling for each dumpling. Once again, make sure dumplings don't leak by squeezing the edges tightly.
DEEP FRYING COOKING INSTRUCTIONS
In a pot put cooking oil in. Heat the oil to 350 degrees F or deep fry a small piece of dumpling wrapper to check if cooking oil is ready. Deep dumpling for 3 to 4 minutes, or until golden brown in colour. Smaller dumplings may take shorter time to deep fry
