Hidden in the heart of Cape Town lies the Groote Schuur Zoo, also known as Rhodes’ Zoo — a hauntingly beautiful reminder of the city’s past. Originally built in 1897 by Cecil John Rhodes as his private menagerie, the zoo officially opened to the public in 1931 before closing its doors between 1975 and 1985.
In this video, I explore the remains of this once-grand estate — from crumbling animal enclosures to overgrown paths that nature has slowly reclaimed. Join me as we uncover the mystery, history, and decay of this forgotten landmark near the University of Cape Town.
