From a live BBC radio broadcast from the Temple Church, London, on St Luke’s Day (18 October) 1972, with the choir of the Temple Church, directed by George Thalben Ball. Organ: Ian le Grice.
The English composer, conductor and educator Henry Walford Davies (see graphic) was born at Oswestry in 1869. In 1882, he was accepted as a chorister at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, and subsequently studied at the Royal College of Music under Parry and Stanford. Although as a performing musician and composer he worked mostly as an organist and church choirmaster, he served with the Royal Air Force during the First World War, and his best-known work (the Royal Air Force March Past, composed jointly with George Dyson in 1918) comes from that period.
In 1898 he was appointed organist of the Temple Church in the City of London, where he remained until 1923. From 1927 to 1932 he was organist and choral director at St George’s Chapel, Windsor. When Sir Edward Elgar died in 1934, Walford Davies was appointed Master of the King’s Music. He died near Bristol in 1941 and is buried in the graveyard at Bristol Cathedral.
