This is the 1958 Lincoln 430 that will be powering our 300, and here, we give an external tour, some history, and a basic rundown of the differences in MEL engines over the years.
I sincerely apologize for forgetting to talk about the Super Marauder. Unfortunately, I am unable to issue an apology video because I don't own a ukelele.
For the uninformed:
Lincoln and Mercury offered a dealer-installed package on the 1958 models called the Super Marauder, including a tri-power intake cast for Ford by Moon, triple Holley 2300s, and a custom cast-aluminum air cleaner. This was the first American production engine to reach 400 Horsepower, and such-equipped Mercurys are considered extremely rare early muscle cars (I don't want to hear anything from the GTO crowd lest I have to bring up the exhaustive list of pre-GTO muscle cars!) It didn't make an appearance until midway through the 1958 model year, and as such, very few (estimated only around 100) vehicles ever received the package.
The interesting thing about the Super Marauder is that because it was a mid-year offering, it was only installed on 1958 engines with lowered compression (10.0:1 vs 10.5:1), slightly retarded cams, and smaller valves, which were all changes the MEL underwent to solve detonation problems. This means we have never seen a Super Marauder in its ultimate form. Add that to the list of automotive travesties right under "Ford detuning the 390".
