Victory Run (ビクトリーラン栄光の13,000キロ―, Bikutoriran Eikou no 13,000 Kiroo, "Victory Run: 13,000 Kilometers of Glory", 빅토리 런: 영광의 13,000킬로) is a racing game released by Hudson Soft for the PC Engine on December 28, 1987. Set against the real Paris–Dakar Rally, players must complete the 13,000-kilometer journey divided into eight stages within the allotted time.
Before each race, you distribute 20 points among five parts—tires, gearbox, engine, suspension, and brakes—to tune your car’s characteristics. During the run, part durability is shown by an icon that shifts from blue to green, yellow, and red; when durability is depleted, that part’s performance drops sharply.
Courses consist of paved road, desert, and grass terrain, featuring slopes, undulations, and various obstacles. Colliding with rival vehicles or obstacles like rocks, mud, trees, and signposts causes your car to spin or crash, incurring time penalties. Remaining time carries over to the next stage; if you exceed the stage limit, your leftover time decreases, and reaching zero means game over.
The graphics use the PC Engine’s high-speed scrolling to make the car shake with the terrain, and four time-of-day settings—morning, noon, evening, and night—add visual variety.
It was later ported and distributed as mobile versions (i-appli, EZ-appli) in 2004 and 2005; to the Wii Virtual Console starting in 2006; to PlayStation Network in 2010 and 2011; and to the Wii U Virtual Console in 2014 and 2017. Since 2013, it’s also playable via cloud gaming services (Hikari TV Game, G-cluster).
Rare among console racers of its time for adopting a rally format, its strategic parts management and high difficulty earned it acclaim among core gamers. In North America, platform familiarity limited its mainstream success, but it retains a cult reputation and remains a flagship racing title for the PC Engine.
