Paid Family leave begins on the day the baby is born, not before. You will fill out Part A of the application which refers to your personal information. Part B must be completed by the employer, not the employee. And you must provide proof of your maternity or paternity. The application indicates what documents to provide as proof of paternity. This benefit has no waiting period, so it begins on the day the claimant indicates, as long as it is after the birth of the baby. Benefits are available for 12 weeks over a 52-week period. It is best to use PFL alone, meaning if you use vacation days or sick days while using the 12 weeks benefit, the insurance carrier can only reimburse the employer. You cannot receive vacation or sick pay and family leave at the same time, it’s not allowed under the PFL regulations. If the family leave is to care for a family member, it begins on the date indicated by the doctor who filled out the medical certification.
