31st July 2017 Class IX B students visited The Gandhi Deaf-Mute Senior Secondary School Jodhpur. It is a School run by an NGO - Jodhpur Badhir Kalyan Samiti, chaired by Mr Kishan Lal Garg. At present there are 287 students.
Sign language is the language spoken by the deaf-mute and so the HHS students were informed about and taught some signs for each alphabet, numbers, colors, etc. They observed and learned surprising everyone as they began to use these signs soon with ease to communicate with the students. They made friends with them, asking their names, classes, favourite colour, sport, the subject they liked most and many more …. A colouring competition for classes 1 to 5 and a drawing/painting competition for Classes 6 to 10 was organized for them. We were amazed to see their creativity. Never Give Up, before Giving Your Best in All That You Face. This was proved to be true by the students of Gandhi School in the friendly Kabbadi match. It was organized with great enthusiasm where victory was not at all the criterion and the joy experienced by both teams is more than evident on the children’s faces. The Gandhi School Team won and in fact, these talented students regularly participate in the district level, state level and national level games organized by SOB (Special Olympics, Bharat). We felt a very big connection with the school and the bonds that were formed between our students and theirs were incredibly real. When it was time to leave and the whole school came out to wave us good bye... The visit had a deep and humbling effect on our students as we observed them interact with the Gandhi school children as if they had been friends for the longest time and without holding back. It was a mutual relationship and we even saw the boys exchange customized handshakes and the girls probably gossip :) The students learned about what it is to be patient, expressive, compassionate and ever smiling in the face of the difficulties that life throws at you. The determination and enthusiasm we noticed in the students, reminded us of Helen Keller who became deaf, dumb, and blind shortly after birth. Despite her greatest drawbacks, she has written her name indelibly in the pages of history as one of the most well known authors and political activists of all time. We now understand that no one is ever defeated until defeat is accepted as a reality. What an absolutely amazing day.
