MEBAR TSO I THE BURNING LAKE I BUMTHANG I BHUTAN I TANG I མེ་འབར་མཚོ།

Mebar Tsho (མེ་འབར་མཚོ།) which translates to “the burning lake is Located in the central valley of Bumthang on the way to Tang village. It takes approximately thirty minutes’ drive to the Mebar Tsho from Chamkhar town. Diverting off the national highway, travelers drive up an unpaved road and on arrival at the site, the travelers then descend towards the lake on foot along the steep hill.
According to legend Terton Pema Lingpa had a vision of the sacred treasures that Guru Rinpoche had hidden within the lake centuries earlier. However, the people of Tang and the local ruler were cynical of his claims. In order to prove his claims, In the early 1475 Pema Lingpa held a butter lamp in his hand as he leapt into the lake and declared: “If I am a demon, I shall die! If I am not, and I am the true spiritual son of Guru Rinpoche, this lamp will continue to burn and I will recover hidden treasures!”. After remaining under water for a long time he re-emerged holding a chest and a scroll of paper with the butter lamp held in his hand still burning bright. Thereafter, the lake came to be known as Mebartsho (the burning Lake).
Mebar Tsho is considered one of the most sacred sites in the region as it is related to the renowned religious treasurer (Terton) Terton Pema Lingpa. Pema Lingpa is considered an incarnated disciple of Padmasambhava who discovered treasure within the lake in late 15th century.
Today, this small fresh water lake is a sacred pilgrimage site with bright multicolored prayer flags surrounding it and a small altar dedicated to Terton Pema Lingpa has also been set up. At the entrance to the lake is the image of Pema Lingpa along with his two sons carved out on to a rock. It is still believed today that people with less sins and spiritual minds are able to distinguish an extraordinary sight in the lake while looking down from a rock overlooking it.
